Project Interview with Duvy

Dirk Hooper
- Duvy, you’re one of the busiest people I know. You
have your hands in a lot of projects and you are doing a lot
to bring music and entertainment to the world. Could you give
the readers an idea of what you are currently working on?
Duvy
- I'm always working on several projects at once. Currently,
I'm updating DFSM and Darkspace to 2007, writing a new CD,
finishing up a sci-fi/horror/romance novel that I have had
floating in my head for awhile, and right after that a book/CD
of my artwork that I am putting together to sell in my online
shop. :)
Dirk Hooper
- You created and run Darkfaery Subculture Magazine, what
is the concept behind DFSM?
Duvy
- In the beginning DFSM was a way for me to connect with other
people about the things that inspired me. When I was little
I used to buy every teen magazine with Duran Duran in them
I could get my hands on and I would cut things out of them
and put together my own magazines to show my friends, so I
guess it was always meant to be something I would do. As the
years went by I realized that it was actually doing some good
bringing people to new bands, new songs, new ideas, new images,
and people with the same interests. What I found was that
I was not alone when I was listening to The Cure by myself
in the dark and finding inspiration there.
Dirk Hooper
- Are you looking for submissions for DFSM?
Duvy
- DFSM accepts submissions all the time. If you're a member
of the site you can make a post and if it is well done I will
approve it and it will appear right on the front page. Otherwise,
I consider any submission sent to me through e-mail too.
Dirk Hooper
- What do you think about the local scene where you live?
Duvy
- I think the underground OKC scene here is awesome. I first
got here in 1991, but I had been keeping up with the scene
here through my cousin since about 1985, so I had no trouble
finding the Wreck and after all that late 80's rock on the
Deep Ellum scene I was glad to get back into dance music.
There is a lot of potential for club owners here that want
to change/grow a music scene; Oklahoma is full of music hungry
minds wishing for something new.
Dirk Hooper
- How would you describe your style of music?
Duvy
- I get asked this a lot and I’m not sure how I would
describe it. It is inspired by everything I see and do. Things
I like. I enjoy writing in a variety of styles, limitations
are boring, but my favorite writing style is gothic industrial.
I like songs that flow and have magick in them.
Dirk Hooper
- Do you do live performance, or do you prefer studio work?
Duvy
- I like both, I love the whole creative process so as long
as I feel like my gifts are being accepted. I have to say,
since my studio is in my home office I get less stress from
studio work. Oklahoma is definitely not Ibiza it takes a lot
more work to get people happy and dancing here.
Dirk Hooper
- You’ve done a lot of work on MySpace backgrounds and
graphic design for your sites and CDs. Is this something you’d
like to do more or is it just a part of your overall media
offerings?
Duvy
- The truth is, I’ve been doing graphic design since
1994, but it was only a hobby back then. It didn’t become
serious for me until Windows 95 came out, probably because
I was able to get a better computer for cheap. The reason
I started doing MySpace design was I knew there were going
to be hundreds of websites scamming, spamming, phishing, and
robbing people from sites that offer free MySpace goodies,
so I wanted to put something up that didn’t do anything
except offer exactly what was claimed without a bunch of underhanded
tricks. I just didn’t know it was going to be so popular.
I mean who knew so many people liked creatures of the night?
Dirk Hooper
- What are you most excited about working on right now?
Duvy
- It’s a tie between my new CD and a book of my art,
the less time I have to work on them the more I want too.
Dirk Hooper
- Where do you see yourself and your projects in five years?
Duvy
- My goal for the next five years is to get a movie deal for
a script I wrote (including the soundtrack) and maybe get
to work it from start to finish. I can't trust my vision to
just anyone. I even have a list of hopefuls ready for a cast
and crew. I have a partial gothic opera finished that I’d
like to do something with soon, I would love to see it turn
into a show of some sort between now and five years.
Dirk Hooper
- Thank you for taking the time to talk to me. Is there anything
you’d like to add?
Duvy
- Thanks for having me. Yes, I would like to add this…if
you guys are having trouble following your dreams or finding
out what makes you happy don’t be afraid to invest more
time in yourself. Don’t get sucked in by what other
people think of you, or what you think that they think. If
you don’t like what you see, change it. Be original.
Remember, they don’t have to be alone with you in your
head, but you do. I know you won’t listen to me know,
because I didn’t listen either, but one day you’ll
say “I should have listened to Duvy!” :P
